Some Experiences Only Exist Here
Hawaii offers many beautiful things. But these are the experiences that go beyond beautiful — the moments that are literally impossible to replicate anywhere else on Earth. If you're planning a Hawaii trip, these belong on your list.
1. Night Snorkel with Giant Manta Rays — Big Island
After dark. Open ocean off the Kona Coast. Hold a foam board. Look down. Manta rays with 12-foot wingspans glide silently beneath you, feeding on plankton drawn by underwater lights. It is completely peaceful. Completely surreal. Zero danger. Total wonder. No other experience in Hawaii — or arguably anywhere in the world — quite compares. > ✦ **Hoku Pick:** Book with a dedicated manta ray operator. Garden Eel Cove is the best site. ---
2. Stand at the Edge of an Active Volcano — Big Island
When Kīlauea is actively erupting — which it has been, on and off, for decades — you can watch the Earth building itself in real time. Orange lava. Steam plumes. The ground beneath you cooled by lava that flowed years ago. There are only a handful of places on Earth where you can safely access this. The Big Island is one of them. ---
3. Doors-Off Helicopter Over the Nā Pali Coast — Kauaʻi
The Na Pali cliffs rise 3,000 feet from the sea. No road reaches here. The only way to see the hidden valleys, cascading waterfalls, and inaccessible beaches of the Na Pali interior is from the air. A doors-off helicopter with forward-facing seats in morning light is, without qualification, one of the most extraordinary experiences available to tourists anywhere in the Pacific. ---
4. Watch Sunrise Above the Clouds at Haleakalā — Maui
Drive up in complete darkness. Stand at 10,023 feet. Watch the sky slowly transform from deep purple to gold above an ocean of clouds, with the Haleakalā crater stretching for miles before you. Permits sell out months in advance. The crowd doesn't diminish the experience. ---
5. Snorkel Molokini Crater — Maui
A half-submerged volcanic crater 3 miles offshore, protected by the crater wall from current and surge. Crystal water to 150-foot depth. Schools of tropical fish so dense they block the light. The underwater experience inside Molokini is unlike any reef you've ever snorkeled. ---
6. Summit Mauna Kea for Stargazing — Big Island
At 13,796 feet above sea level (the summit of the world's tallest mountain measured from its oceanic base), you're above 40% of the Earth's atmosphere. The night sky from here contains stars invisible from anywhere at sea level. Professional astronomers have been stationed at this summit for decades. The stargazing is unmatched on Earth. ---
7. Kayak to a Place No Road Reaches — Kauaʻi
Paddle the Wailua River through jungle to Secret Falls. Or kayak along the Na Pali Coast with a guide to beaches accessible only by sea. The feeling of arriving somewhere that required effort to reach is irreplaceable. ---
8. Swim in a Black Sand Beach Bay at Sunset — Big Island
Punalu'u. Black volcanic sand. Hawksbill sea turtles sleeping on shore. Pink and orange sky. Warm water. One of the most visually dramatic experiences in Hawaii. ---
