Maui with Kids — Better Than You'd Expect
Maui is one of the best Hawaiian islands for families. The beaches are beautiful and varied. The activities are genuinely exciting for kids without being overwhelming for parents. And the pace of the island allows for real rest between adventures.
Here's a week that works for everyone.
✦ Day by Day
Day 1 — Kāʻanapali Beach & Black Rock
Arrive, check in, and head to Kāʻanapali Beach — Maui's most iconic stretch of sand. The water is calm at the south end near Whaler's Village. At the north end, Puu Kekaa (Black Rock) is a natural lava formation surrounded by clear water and colorful fish. Bring snorkel gear.
At 6pm, watch the cliff diving ceremony at the Sheraton — free, beautiful, and an instant family memory.

Day 2 — Turtle Town Snorkel Boat
A boat tour to Turtle Town off Mākena is the definitive Maui experience for kids. Hawaiian green sea turtles glide through the water just below the surface. The guides know exactly where to find them. Kids who are nervous about snorkeling often become completely comfortable here within minutes.
✦ Day by Day
Day 3 — Road to Hana
Even young kids love this. The waterfalls are dramatic, the bamboo forests feel magical, and the black sand beach at Waiʻānapanapa is genuinely unlike anything they've seen.
Best Stops for Kids:
- Twin Falls (short walk, big waterfall)
- Waiʻānapanapa Black Sand Beach
- Wailua Falls (viewable from the road)
✦ Hoku Tip: Pack snacks and download offline maps. The road has no cell service for long stretches.

Day 4 — Haleakalā (Afternoon/Sunset)
For families, the afternoon drive to Haleakalā is more practical than the sunrise visit (no 2am wake-up). The crater at sunset is still extraordinary. The high altitude, the lunar landscape, and the scale of the caldera always impress kids.
✦ Day by Day
Day 5 — Molokini Crater Snorkel
The most impressive snorkeling in Hawaii. Book a morning catamaran to Molokini — a half-submerged volcanic crater with 150-foot visibility. The fish are abundant and the experience is calm and approachable for kids as young as 5 with proper snorkel gear.

Day 6 — Whale Watching (Dec–March)
If you're visiting in winter, a 2-hour whale watching tour from Mā'alaea Harbor is not optional. Humpback whales breach close enough to feel the splash. Kids are transfixed.
Off-season alternative: Spend the morning at the Maui Ocean Center — one of the best aquariums in the Pacific.

Day 7 — Wailea Beach & Farewell
Maui's most beautiful beach for a final morning. Calm water, soft sand, excellent snorkeling off the rocks at the north end.
