Oahu's Wild Side

Waikiki is iconic. But Oahu's real adventure lives beyond the resort strip — in ridge trails with knife-edge views, surf breaks that attract the world's best, and ocean adventures that you'll be recounting for years. Here's the adventure lover's version of Oahu.

Hike Koko Head Crater Stairs — Sunrise

One thousand and forty-eight railroad ties bolted into a steep volcanic crater. It's not technically a hike — it's more like climbing a staircase into the sky. Go before dawn and you'll reach the top as Oahu turns gold below you. > ✦ **Hoku Tip:** Bring a headlamp. Start at 4:30am. The view from the top at sunrise is worth the suffering.

Watch (or Learn to Surf) at Pipeline

From November to February, the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore produces the world's most famous and dangerous waves. Watch from the beach. In summer, the same beach has gentle waves perfect for beginner surf lessons.

Manoa Falls Trail & Night Hike

A 1.6-mile trail through dense rainforest to a 150-foot waterfall. Go in the late afternoon to hit the waterfall at golden light — or book a guided night hike for a completely different experience.

Hike the Pillbox Trail, Lanikai

Two WWII military bunkers perched on a ridge above Lanikai Beach. The trail is steep and loose — but short. The reward is a 270-degree view over the Mokulua Islands and Kailua Bay. > ✦ **Hoku Tip:** Start at dawn. Park on Kaelepulu Drive. The trail begins near the end of a residential cul-de-sac.

Scuba Diving at Electric Beach

A warm-water discharge from a power plant draws huge numbers of tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasionally dolphins and manta rays to this unusual reef. One of Oahu's best shore dives.

Kayak to the Mokulua Islands, Lanikai

Paddle from Lanikai Beach to two tiny offshore islets. White sand, blue water, nesting seabirds. Bring snorkel gear for the surrounding reef.

Cliff Jumping at Waimea Bay

In summer when the surf is flat, the famous rock at Waimea Bay becomes a jumping platform. Watch the locals first — they know the timing.

Deep Sea Fishing off Honolulu

The waters off Oahu hold blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, mahimahi, and wahoo. Half-day and full-day charters depart from Kewalo Basin near downtown Honolulu. ---
